If David didn’t know Christ, was he saved?

One question that is interesting to ask is if David came before Christ, and we need Christ to be saved, did David get saved even though he didn’t know about Jesus?

I had struggled with this question, thinking that it didn’t seem like God’s nature to deny someone salvation just because they were born at the wrong time. But it wasn’t until I found this next verse that I discovered something really cool.

who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity, but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,

2 Timothy 1:9‭-‬10 NASB

So we can see in this verse that the truth of Christ was always in the world and that it was only revealed to humanity when Christ came to die on the cross. This means that the truth of Christ is fundemental to this world and has always been. This would imply that all those people before Christ had access to Him and to forgiveness. But surely, you may ask, if David was saved though he did not know of Christ how come we need to know of Christ to be saved today?

Well I propose that in his own way David did know of Christ, because he knew of the Father. And in truth what it really means to know Christ and to love Him, is that we know the Father and love the Father. And now that Christ has been revealed as the perfect representation of God, if we deny Him now, we deny God.

If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.”

John 14:7 NASB

But even with all this you may still ask, can those before us really be with the Father? And even with these verses, where is the evidence in the Bible for anyone knowing Jesus even though they hadn’t ever heard of Him? Well what about when Jesus was transfigured on the mount, and standing beside Him were both Moses and Elijah. Even though they had not know of Christ in their earthly lives, they knew Him and even spoke to Christ when He was on earth.

And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.

Matthew 17:2‭-‬3 NASB

In conclusion we know that all peoples have access to Christ and salvation, no matter the timeline. This is because we know that the nature of Christ and His purpose has been true from the beginning of all creation and to eternity.
