Potential of Humanity

I think one of the most amazing things that God ever said about humanity was that if we all get together and put our minds to a goal, we can acomplish anything.

The Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them.

Genesis 11:6 NASB

Now this is actually an amazing statement, God is saying that the potential for humanity is essentially unlimited. And that is both a scary and exhilarating thought. And humanity has the choice to either follow God and create a better world or we can make ourselves our own gods and follow that.

And it might seem appealing to think of leaving God and following after our own hearts, but we know that this is evil. And as a prime example of all the evil that would come of humanity being their own god, look at history. Think of all the evils in the world, apartheid, the Holocaust, and the horrors of evil dictators. All these come when we make ourselves god.

If we choose God instead of ourselves, we are choosing humility and others over ourselves. This is the way that God desired the authority system to be structured. That those above would provide for those below and those below would provide for those below them and so on. It is a system of service to others rather than service to the head.

If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.

John 13:14 NASB

Jesus taught us to wash feet, but the world says take as much as you can for yourself. And part of our hope as Christians is that we wait on the day when the world will be ruled by a servant, by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. When he rules that world will finally unlock that potential that God said we could have, but this time for good and not for evil.
