Seeking the Kingdom

I know that sometimes we feel like we are disconnected from the Father, like for some reason we have lost a sense of things going the right way. And I know that there have been many times in my walk with God that I have felt this way and that I feel like I need to get back to my walk with Him. And in the past I didn’t understand why I had lost this connection, until God showed me what was wrong.

Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’  For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.  But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Matthew 6:31‭-‬33 NASB

I used this verse in the past to understand how we are to view our situation and relationship with the Father. That He comes first in all things. But it was only a little while ago that I realized this was a priciple that is also found in the Old Testament. In the book of Haggai, the Jews that came out of Babylon were back in the promised land and had started to rebuild the Temple. But after a while they got lazy in building the Temple and had decided that they should focus on building up the farms and community first instead. You see, they weren’t putting God first. And because of this, all their other goals and aspirations were suffering for it.

“ You look for much, but behold, it comes to little; when you bring it home, I blow it away. Why?” declares the Lord of hosts, “Because of My house which lies desolate, while each of you runs to his own house.

Haggai 1:9 NASB

And it wasn’t until the Jews had refocused on God that they started to be blessed by Him. And you may be asking, how does this have to do with my connection to God on a personal level. Well I don’t know about you, but I have found that I feel disconnected with God, when I chose to disconnect. And what I mean by that is, when I chose to spend more time working and playing, and less time studying and praying, I am choosing myself over God. When I chose to help myself and not help others, I am choosing myself over God. But if I refocus on His word and His ways, then I start to feel the connection come back. So as a tip for all Christians out there, if you feel like God isn’t hearing you or that He isn’t with you, think about how you may not be fully with Him first.

You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.

John 15:16 NASB
