Jesus and Genetics
I was making a video on Matthew 1 the other day and I wanted to share that same teaching here on my blog. The beginning of Matthew seems boring to a lot of people but we have to understand why it is there because it is very important. In chapter 1, we see that it starts off by listing the lineage of Jesus from Adam to Abraham to David to Jesus. And it is very important to have this here because Jesus is prophetic in this way.
And that brings me to another point. We need to start looking at Jesus as prophetic. His coming was foretold to us in the prophets and it is the reason why He is the Messiah. So let’s take a look at the prophecies about the Messiah and His lineage.
So the Lord God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”
Genesis 3:14-15 NKJV
So in the very beginning of the Bible, there is a prophecy that was spoken to the Serpent in the garden about its demise. And the prophecy was that a seed from the woman would bruise the head of the serpent and the serpent would bruise the heel of the seed. So this is actually a messianic prophecy about Jesus. But let’s look at another prophecy about Jesus’s genetics.
In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
Genesis 22:18 NKJV
So here we have Abraham, and God is making a promise to him about his seed. Now you may think that this promise is about the covenant and how the blessing of the covenant would pass down through the generations. And in time most people would be from Abraham and thus would be blessed. But it is actually talking about Jesus. This is what Paul says about it.
Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ.
Galatians 3:16 NKJV
So we can see that the blessing that would come through the seed of Abraham was actually Christ. But there is one more step. Christ as the son of David. So let’s look at what the prophet Isaiah has to say.
There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord .
Isaiah 11:1-2 NKJV
So these verses come from Chapter 11 of Isaiah which is all super Messianic. But we can see from this passage that the Messiah was to be from the stem of Jesse, who was the father of David. So Messiah came from David and He was propheticly from Adam, Abraham, and David. This is why Jesus’ geneology was in the beginning of Matthew.
Hope you guys enjoyed this blog post and I hope you share this on social media with your friends and family. Thanks!
