Jesus the Sin Offering

I have been reading Leviticus recently and the past couple of posts have been on the topic of Jesus and how he fulfills the sacrifices in the Old Testament. So I thought I would continue the theme as I have found what I think is another correlation to the sacrifice of Jesus and one of the offerings found in Leviticus. Specifically, the sin offering.

So I won’t go through what the whole sin offering is or through the process of the sacrifice specifically, but I wanted to point out some important things about the sin offering that I think are interesting. There are two things that I found so let’s start with the first one.

The priest who offers it for sin shall eat it. It shall be eaten in a holy place, in the court of the tent of meeting.

Leviticus 6:26 NASB

So what I found interesting about this verse is that the priest that offers the sin offering shall eat the it. Now when I read this I felt like the holy spirit was telling me that there is something here about the priest eating the sacrifice. And immedietly my mind jumped to when Jesus spoke about eating His flesh.

As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me.

John 6:57 NASB

This whole passage about eating Christ has always been very interesting to me but I have another new understanding now that I see Christ as the sin offering. We are to eat him as a sin offering that we have offered up. For our own covering of sin. And we are even called priests by Peter so we are not unqualified to offer up this sacrifice. We are a royal priesthood.

But you are a chosen race , a royal priesthood , a holy nation , a people for  God’s  own possession , so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

1 Peter 2:9 NASB

So the second thing that we found is that there is an aspect of the holiness in the sin offering that is similar to Jesus. When any blood from the sin offering is sprinkled on any garments, the garments are then to be washed.

Anyone who touches its flesh will become consecrated; and when any of its blood splashes on a garment, in a holy place you shall wash what was splashed on.

Leviticus 6:27 NASB

And when I read this I immediately saw the connection between this aspect of the sin offering and Jesus.

 I said to him, “My Lord, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Revelation 7:14 NASB

So you see that the connection between Jesus and the sin offering is that the blood of both leads to a washing a garments. But those are the only things that I feel like the Holy Spirit has shown me about the sin offering right now. There could be more and there probably is but I haven’t been show yet. If you guys have any more connections feel free to comment below on them. Thanks for reading! Jesus is the way!
