The birth of the Levites

So I was reading in Numbers today and I came across a very interesting passage that I felt was symbolic and prophetic for the believers in Messiah. Now the passage is about how the Levites were dedicated to God as His own. And in this blog I am going to be drawing more connections between the Levites and the disciples of Jesus that we talked about in the blog post, “The Firstborn are Mine”. So let’s get started.

Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “Take the Levites from among the children of Israel and cleanse them ceremonially.  Thus you shall do to them to cleanse them: Sprinkle water of purification on them, and let them shave all their body, and let them wash their clothes, and so make themselves clean.

Numbers 8:5‭-‬7 NKJV

So while I was reading this, and with the concept of the Levites being a picture of the Church, I saw how this was an image of baptism. They are symbolically making themselves as though they were babies. They cut all the hair off their bodies, they were sprinkled in water, and they washed their clothes and were made clean. Now with this imagery in mind, let’s continue to find more connections.

“And you shall stand the Levites before Aaron and his sons, and then offer them like a wave offering to the Lord . Thus you shall separate the Levites from among the children of Israel, and the Levites shall be Mine. After that the Levites shall go in to service the tabernacle of meeting. So you shall cleanse them and offer them like a wave offering. For they are  wholly given to Me from among the children of Israel; I have taken them for Myself instead of all who open the womb, the firstborn of all the children of Israel.

Numbers 8:13‭-‬16 NKJV

So If we look at this next passage that continues the account of the santification of the Levites, we can see there are more connections. For example, the Levites according to verse 13 were to be offered like a wave offering to the Lord. And in the same way Christians are called to be like wave offering, and to make our lives a living sacrifice.

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which  is your reasonable service.

Romans 12:1 NKJV

Another connection is that the Lord says that the Levites are His, just as us believers are His and we have been bought by Him.

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who  is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

I Corinthians 6:19‭-‬20 NKJV

Now let’s look at one more verse that I think draws the deepest connection between the Levites and the Church in this passage.

And the Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes; then Aaron presented them like a wave offering before the Lord , and Aaron made atonement for them to cleanse them.

Numbers 8:21 NKJV

In this last connection we see that the current high priest at the time, made attonment for them to cleanse them. And in the same way our High priest, Jesus, made attonment for us to cleanse us of our slavery to sin. I will continue to make posts on these conenctions if I find anymore.

Hope you guys liked the blog post! If you did, feel free to share on social media and if you want to support me you can do that here. Thanks! Jesus is the Way!
