The Spirit on Moses

I was reading in Numbers yesterday and I came upon another interesting passage. This passage was about Moses dealing with the complaining Israelites. But there is something awesome that is hiding there that I wanted to share with you today. Let’s check it out.

I am not able to bear all these people alone, because the burden is too heavy for me. If You treat me like this, please kill me here and now—if I have found favor in Your sight—and do not let me see my wretchedness!” So the Lord said to Moses: “Gather to Me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; bring them to the tabernacle of meeting, that they may stand there with you. Then I will come down and talk with you there. I will take of the Spirit that is upon you and will put the  same upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you may not bear it yourself alone.

Numbers 11:14‭-‬17 NKJV

So in this passage, we can see that Moses is obviously having a hard time with the children of Israel. So God says that He will take the Spirit that is on Moses and give it to the elders so that they can share the burden of the people with Moses.

So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord , and he gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people and placed them around the tabernacle. Then the Lord came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was upon him, and placed the  same upon the seventy elders; and it happened, when the Spirit rested upon them, that they prophesied, although they never did so again.

Numbers 11:24‭-‬25 NKJV

So God puts the Spirit on these elders and they go off to prophesy to the Children of Israel. Now after this happens, there are two men that are in the camp and they continue to prophesy to the people. When Joshua hears this, he says some words to Moses about the situation. Now it isn’t what Joshua says that is interesting, but what Moses says.

And a young man ran and told Moses, and said, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” So Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, one of his choice men, answered and said, “Moses my Lord, forbid them!” Then Moses said to him, “Are you zealous for my sake? Oh, that all the Lord ’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put His Spirit upon them!”

Numbers 11:27‭-‬29 NKJV

So when Moses responds to Joshua, He is almost responding with prophecy. This is because, his wish did come true. We as the Lord’s people all have the Spirit, we have the Holy Spirit. And this was prophecied about all the way in Numbers! Praise God!

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.  And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—  the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.  I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

John 14:15‭-‬18 NKJV
