A Tool for Remembrance: The Tassels

So I was reading in the Book of Numbers and came across an interesting commandment. And I wanted to share it with you guys because I think it is a good commandment, but also because I think it may have some special prophetic meaning behind it. So let’s get into it.

The Lord also spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the sons of Israel, and tell them that they shall make for themselves tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and that they shall put on the tassel of each corner a cord of blue. It shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the Lord , so as to do them and not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you played the harlot, so that you may remember to do all My commandments and be holy to your God. I am the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt to be your God; I am the Lord your God.”

Numbers 15:37‭-‬41 NASB

So if we look at this commandment we can see that it is a tool for the Israelites so that they wouldn’t turn from the Lord. It was a way to remind them of the Laws of God when they were being tempted. It reminds them to not follow their own way but instead follow a higher way, God’s way. But I think there is something special about what the tassels represent and their purpose. The Law of God, and remembrance of that Law.

I believe that as I was reading this passage, the Holy Spirit reminded me ( funny enough) that there was also one who is there for remembrance. The Holy Spirit. And that the idea of the Holy Spirit being a kind of prophetic tassel is actually in the prophets and in the words of Jesus. Let me show you.

“Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord , “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord . “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord , “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord ,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the Lord , “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

Jeremiah 31:31‭-‬34 NASB

So we see that the prophetic new covenant, which is the covenant that Jesus made on the cross, has an aspect of writing the Law on our hearts. And not only that, but we would all know the Lord. And the Holy Spirit fulfills both of these things.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.

John 14:26 NASB

The Holy Spirit is the one that teaches us all things, and He is the one that brings to us remembrance. He is the tassel that we wear on our hearts. So I suggest that we wear the tassels as commanded, but also that we listen to the tassel of our heart. We should listen to the Holy Spirit. The challenge today is to actively reach out to the Holy Spirit today and connect with Him. Seek His counsel.
