Halloween and Christians: A Paradox

So I know that Halloween is just around the corner and that there will be a lot of Christians this year participating in the Holiday. I know that there are many people that may read this and disagree with what I am about to say. I think that Christians should never celebrate Halloween. And I think this is a super important subject to talk about. So stick with me, I will be providing an argument for it. Let’s get started.

Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, “I will dwell in them and walk among them ; And I will be their God , and they shall be My people .  Therefore, come out from their midst and be separate ,” says the Lord. “And do not touch what is unclean ; And I will welcome you.  And I will be a father to you, And you shall be sons and daughters to Me,” Says the Lord Almighty.

2 Corinthians 6:14‭-‬18 NASB1995

I think this verse in Second Corinthians is the perfect verse for this subject. We all know that Halloween is a day that celebrates evil spirits. Whether it is the devil, witches, or some other evil thing. But for some reason, we as Christians try to rationalize a reason for celebrating the Holiday. We say it is just about wearing a costume, and dressing up. Yet we decorate our houses with spiders, zombies, and put out carved pumpkins outside our houses (idols). And we don’t even know the significance of the things we do. Trying to take the demonic out of Halloween is like saying a baptism is just a bath. It is a spiritual holiday, but not for God, it is a holiday for the wicked spirits. And we have no partnership with evil spirits, yet we celebrate the holiday that is made for them. We would never say that we agree with evil spirits, but on Halloween we dress up as ghosts and ghouls. We watch horror movies about them, that are designed to scare us. I mean look at the name, ‘Horror; movie. The whole point is to horrify you. Why would you watch something like that as a Christian.

But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil.

1 Thessalonians 5:21‭-‬22 NASB1995

So let us examine Halloween carefully. It is a Holiday, that is older than you think. It actually originates from the Celtic pagans long ago. They didn’t call it Halloween though, they called it Samhain. Let me show you an excerpt from the Wikapedia page on Samhain.

According to Irish mythology, Samhain (like Bealtaine) was a time when the ‘doorways’ to the Otherworld opened, allowing supernatural beings and the souls of the dead to come into our world; while Bealtaine was a summer festival for the living, Samhain “was essentially a festival for the dead”.

Wikipedia page on Samhain

This was taken straight from the page on Samhain. This is what you are actually celebrating when you celebrate Halloween. You celebrate a day when supernatural being come into this world. And they aren’t talking about angels. These are demons. I mean look at what Halloween is all about and tell me it isn’t demonic. Movies about demons, murderers, and evil spirits. The holiday is renown for ouija boards and witchcraft. I mean be honest with yourself, can you really celebrate this holiday without coming into agreement with these things?

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Ephesians 6:12 NASB1995

If we don’t start to recognize that we need to be separated from the world and the celebrations of the enemy, then we are going to be stuck in our progress as Christians. We need to make that separation happen. What is worse, missing Halloween this year, or rationalizing to yourself that a holiday celebrating the enemies of God is okay. You can make that decision for yourself. But I want to leave you with a video from John Ramirez that talks about Halloween. Check it out here. Thanks for reading this post. Jesus is the WAY!
