You have to become a Wheat Seed
Many people who are in the Christian world, or who have been part of the Chrisitan world at some time have heard of the concept of dying to self. And often people associate that with the resistance to sin, fasting, or any other type of personal sacrifice to God. It is about putting to death the desires of our flesh. Now this is all well and good, but what exactly is the point of dying to the flesh? Sure it keeps us from sinning against God and hurting other people because we refrain from sin, but is there another purpose besides that? Well I believe there is and the purpose is found in a word from Jesus. Let’s check it out!
And Jesus *answered them, saying, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal. If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.
John 12:23-26 NASB1995
Something that the Holy Spirit showed me from this passage is that just like Jesus is the wheat seed that fell and produced fruit, we too are wheat seeds. This is because Wheat produces wheat. The Son of God dies to produces Sons of God. And we are to take up this mantle as well. We should see ourselves and our lives as wheat seeds. If we die to our selves, it isn’t for nothing, but rather that we would produce fruit from this death. The only way we can walk in that kind of self denial and death is if we hate our present lives. Jesus says that anyone who hates his life in this world will keep it to eternal life. Now that doesn’t mean you hate existence, but rather you hate your own story and aspirations. Everyone has their own plans for their life, especially here in America. Everyone is interested in getting their own honor and glory. But Jesus was interested in what the Father had planned for Him and He was only interested in glorifying the Father. We need to have this same attitude and realize that this story isn’t about us. It is about God and all of humanity. And You can have a role and part to play if you just die to yourself, just like Jesus did. Let’s all work on becoming wheat seeds so that we can bear fruit for the Father.
