Warship: The Power of Worship in Spiritual Warfare

Worship and Worship music is a fundamental part of the Christian walk these days. Now it hasn’t always been, but with the increase in technology we have been able to make worship music a part of our everyday lives. This has helped people to grow in God and experience Him in amazing ways. So when I found this passage in Judges that speaks on the power of anointed music, I knew I had to share it with you guys. Let’s check it out.

Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord terrorized him. Saul’s servants then said to him, “Behold now, an evil spirit from God is terrorizing you. Let our Lord now command your servants who are before you. Let them seek a man who is a skillful player on the harp; and it shall come about when the evil spirit from God is on you, that he shall play the harp with his hand, and you will be well.” So Saul said to his servants, “Provide for me now a man who can play well and bring him to me.” Then one of the young men said, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is a skillful musician, a mighty man of valor, a warrior, one prudent in speech, and a handsome man; and the Lord is with him.”

1 Samuel 16:14‭-‬18 NASB1995

To give you context for the story, you have to first understand that Saul had disobeyed God and because of this he lost the spirit of God. This was also because David had been anointed as the new King of Israel, even though he wasn’t physically the King yet. Now when the Spirit of God left him, an evil spirit was sent to him by God. I believe this may have been to instigate Saul’s demise. When Saul’s counselors saw this problem, they came a with a plan to help the King. The wise counselors knew that music would help King Saul to overcome this evil spirit. So they recruited David to play the harp for Saul.

So it came about whenever the evil spirit from God came to Saul, David would take the harp and play it with his hand; and Saul would be refreshed and be well, and the evil spirit would depart from him.

1 Samuel 16:23 NASB1995

From this passage we can see that because David was playing on the harp, the evil spirit would leave Saul. This is the power of anointed music. God will anoint people in music because he wants to use them to release his power. This power has the ability to push back against the spiritual forces of darkness. If you are a worshiper or are part of the worship team, then you are part of God’s army. The more you sing and play for the Lord, the more you break the power of the enemy. Let worship be your weapon against the enemy today! Worship the Lord for everything he has done for us on the cross!
