Today we are going to be talking about supernatural provision, and more specifically the story of how God supernaturally provided for Elijah in the desert. Learn how God can do this for you too! Let’s get started.

Provision for Elijah

The word of the Lord came to him, saying, “Go away from here and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. It shall be that you will drink of the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to provide for you there.” So he went and did according to the word of the Lord, for he went and lived by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he would drink from the brook.

1 Kings 17:2‭-‬6 NASB1995

Before we start on this lesson, I want to give you some context on the passage. This takes place in the northern ten tribes of Israel, when King Ahab was ruling. Now King Ahab was an idolator, and he had turned away from God. This lead Elijah to pronounce a curse to Ahab, which was that no rain would come upon Israel unless Elijah called for it. After this was spoken, the Lord led Elijah to the brook Cherith. This is where the passage above starts.

Now the cool part of this story is that we get to see how God provides for Elijah in a supernatural way. God sends Elijah up to this brook so that he would have water, and then has ravens bring him food. Now what is cool is that God didn’t magically call food down from the sky, even though having ravens deliver food basically is that, but He went through physical means.

Testimony

And we can read this and think, ” Wow that is really cool, but would never happen for me.” And I would say that for a long time I thought the same way, until I stepped out in faith. So let me give you my testimony of experiencing the supernatural provision of God.

It started in my early morning quiet time with God. And when I was praying, I felt led by the Lord to read a couple of passages about supernatural provision to my girlfriend later that day. So when I got to her house, we got out the Bible and started reading. We read the above passage as well as the rest of 1 Kings chapter 17 and also 2 Kings chapter 4.

Stepping out in Faith

After reading these passages, we talked about them for a little and then moved on in the conversation. My girlfriend then asked me if she could buy me a gift, but she wanted to know if God was okay with it. It was a pet bird that I had been jokingly asking about. I prayed about it and I felt that the Lord was saying it was okay. So after hearing from the Lord and trusting in the passages about provision, we went to the store.

When we got there, I was already nervous. At the time we didn’t have much money to do fun things together, let alone buy gas money to see each other. This made me all the more hesitant to buy the bird. We finally picked a bird we liked, then stepped out in faith to buy it. After that we brought the bird home and settle in.

God comes through with Provision

Later that day, I went to play disc golf with my dad for his birthday. On the way back to the car after playing my dad asked me about some old golf clubs I had. He wanted to buy them from me and he offered me a price. This ended up being the exact cost of the bird I had bought just earlier that day! God is good. The Lord provided a way, even though we didn’t have enough money. This is the power of stepping out in faith and trusting in the Word of God. You can do this too!
